What An Award Event Celebrating Sheffield Talent And Influencers Could Look Like Today?

Talent and supporters of talent who were active during the 80s and 90s in Sheffield may remember there used to be award events to celebrate the local talent, success stories and community heroes of the city. With so much social media based these days, it sometimes feels like we have become more disconnected from physical events and connections that feed positive energy and motivation for people to keep going.

With the energy in Sheffield growing, rise of a new generation of talent with fresh ideas, the return of established minds motivated again and the city becoming increasingly culturally diverse, now feels like a good time to be celebrating the small and big wins that have taken place over the past decade.

We had a good think back to as many achivments and events that have occured in recent and past times that have opened doors, set standards and inspired a local culture change. This got us thinking what a potential Sheffield Mobo style event and categories could look like on a smaller scale.

Potential Venues - Sheffield City Hall with a Capacity of 500 - around 2000 people or Crucible Theatre with a capacity of up to around 900 people. In terms of tickets, the mixture of audiences and support between nominees would sell well. A lot of talent have reached a point of reaching these numbers with their own events so we would bank on an award event picking up interest.

You could include other categories such as Best Dancer, Best Videographer/Content Developer, Best Podcast, Best Artist (Graffiti, Canvas etc), Best Radio Station, Best Community Project and others to highlight and celebrate the work of others.

Like many award shows, there is an award for the legends and locally we have some influential figures which have opened the doors for others in many different ways. These are the people that have remained consitent in their influence for over a decade, continuted to grow as people, inspred others and contributed to pushing Sheffield culture forward. In our opinion, these would include people such as Tez Kidd, Beverley Bennett, Chill Out, Alex Deadman, Matic, DJ Skillz, TDX Campbell, Nathan Geering, Kojak, Dominic Heslop, Shinobi, Lloyd Samuels, J Rugged and Michael Redhead to name a few (A lot more could be mentioned we know). Each of these people in their fields of music, dance, art, community or a mixture of fields and other creativity have for sure had a big impact in the city and helped push culture forward. A lot of the work these people do go unseen behind the scene and a lot of people have no idea the doors they have knocked down.

Remember, this article is just to spark thought and give an idea how any potential event could look. You could replace some of the names mentioned with other names and it would still be as significant, we tried to focus on names that have hands down got a resume that is hard to argue agasint.

Either way, these type of events are good to shine light on things audiences had no idea about which can only be better for everyone else also. Sheffield is doing this more and more as different minds are collabroating in interesting ways pushing barriers even further. We also believe that something like this would inspire and motivate even more new talent to share there skills locally. Due to this, it feels even more so that it will not be long before award events become a regular again.
